Earlier today, Unity announced that the latest version of their free game development tools, Unity 4.2, finally adds official support for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. In another related announcement, Unity has launched a new game development contest in a partnership with Microsoft.
The contest page has the details, which reveals that it has a total prize pool of over $100,000. The grand prize is $30,000 for the best Unity game made for Windows 8/RT, with another $30,000 for the best Windows Phone 8 Unity game. Each platform also have second and third place prize of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.
The contest also has several honorable mention categories which are as follows:
- Best New Game Content
- Best Port of an Existing Game
- Best Gameplay
- Best use of native features
- Best Use of Live Tiles
The developers who win in these categories will receive a free a Unity Pro license with a Windows Store Pro publishing add-on.
Developers who have already made Unity-based games for other platforms can port them to the new Windows platforms and submit them into the contest. There is a limit of 10 entries per person. The deadline for the entering the contest is September 30th.
