Slowly, but surely, Android 7.0 Nougat has been making its way to a number of Samsung"s previously released handsets which have included the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and S6 active on AT&T as well as the Galaxy A5 (2016) in the last week. In the meantime, Galaxy S7 and S7 edge owners have been left waiting for the update despite recent security updates coming through the pipeline.
Now, at least for owners of the unlocked versions of these handsets in the US, the wait now appears to be over. According to a number of users over on Reddit, the upgrade to Android 7.0 Nougat is now being offered as an over-the-air (OTA) update, bypassing the need to use the Smart Switch app. However, be warned, as the upgrade weighs in at just over 1.2GB, making a Wi-Fi connection a necessity, except for those who can accept a sizeable dent to their monthly cellular data allowance.
What does seem a bit odd this time around is that updates have made it to unlocked devices well after US carriers, such as Sprint and Verizon, which kicked off their rollouts earlier this year. Generally, unlocked handsets have acted as the canary in the coal mine as far as OTA updates are concerned.
In any case, if you"ve not yet been prompted to install the update, you can manually force a check via the software update section in the settings menu so you can enjoy some Nougat goodness.
