Upgrade to Office 2016 for just $35, if you have Windows 10 and Office 2010 or earlier

Yesterday Microsoft finally released Office 2016 for Windows users, two months after Mac users had already been able to upgrade to it. Although the wait was a bit longer for Windows users, and Volume Licensing users will not be able to get it until October 1st, the company has put out a special offer to upgrade for very little cost, providing you have already upgraded to Windows 10 and own a copy of Office 2010 or earlier.

Last night Terry Myerson posted on the Blogging Windows website the terms for the deal:

I also want to highlight a very cool offer from the Office team — if you upgrade to Windows 10 and have Office 2010 or earlier, you can get a 50% discount on a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal through the pre-installed Get Office app.

So technically, you would be buying an Office 365 Personal subscription for one year at 50% discount, which translates to $35, but all of the included Office apps are for Office 2016, and will require a renewal after one year. Microsoft may also add on a free month if you enable automatic renewal of the subscription, giving you 13 months instead of twelve, to start off with.

An Office 365 Personal subscription gives you access to the Office desktop suite on PC and Mac, along with full editing capabilities on mobile Office apps for Windows Phone, Android and iOS. You also get 1TB of OneDrive online storage thrown in for good measure. The full details of the subscription can be found here.

The deal hints at the importance of taking advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 offer, applicable to those currently on Windows 7 or 8.1. It"s not known for how long this deal will run, but it may coincide with the free Windows 10 upgrade offer which expires in July 2016.
