uTorrent (also known as μTorrent) is the world"s most popular BitTorrent client, with over 150 million users around the world. But there"s bad news for those who frequent its community forums.
uTorrent, which is part of BitTorrent Inc., has revealed that its forums have been hacked, and is advising users to change their passwords without delay. The company said it was "made aware of a security issue involving the vendor which powers our forums."
"The vulnerability appears to have been through one of the vendor’s other clients," it added. "However it allowed attackers to access some information on other accounts. As a result, attackers were able to download a list of our forum users."
It seems that there"s some confusion over the full extent to which data has been compromised in the hack, but uTorrent stated:
As a precaution, we are advising our users to change their passwords. While the passwords may not be used as a vector on the forums, those hashed passwords should be considered compromised.
However, as TorrentFreak reports, while uTorrent has posted an "important security advisory" on its forums, it appears that the company has not yet notified users directly, or even via its Twitter feed, which has only tweeted once this year.
