A few weeks ago, Valve announced plans to give the millions of Steam community users a chance to determine which games should be added to the PC and Mac game downloading service. Today, those plans officially got underway with the launch of Steam Greenlight.
The new Greenlight page on the Steam Community website is a location where independent game developers can go ahead and rally support for their games to be considered for publication on Steam. Valve states:
Steam Greenlight allows developers and publishers to post information and media about their game in an effort to convince the Community that the game should be released on Steam. Greenlight piggybacks on Steam Workshop"s flexible system that organizes content and lets customers rate and leave feedback.
There are over 70 games already on the Steam Greenlight page as of this writing, including the first person shooter Ascension: Arenas of War, the top down action game Guerrilla Bob and the casual puzzle game But to Paint a Universe.
Valve says they already "intend to continually grow and modify Greenlight" as they get more feedback from both game developers and Steam community members. It will be interesting to see if this approach to rally gamers to publish games on Steam will work.
