The Xbox One is finally getting Gaijin Entertainment"s free-to-play combined arms warfare title, War Thunder. The game officially launched last year for PC and PlayStation 4 following a long-running beta period. And now, the Russian studio announced that the game is being developed for the Microsoft console as well.
An enhanced Xbox One X version is also planned, but the developer did not say what improvements will this version have over the regular version. Gaijin Entertainment CEO, Anton Yudintsev, said the following regarding the new development:
“Our fans have been asking for War Thunder on Xbox One and we have been working toward bringing its crossplay experience to them. We are thrilled to announce that we have reached an agreement with Microsoft to bring War Thunder to Xbox One and Xbox One X. More than 20 million players have enjoyed War Thunder across multiple platforms and we cannot wait for Xbox One and Xbox One X owners to join the battle.”
The game currently features cross-play functionality across PC and PlayStation 4 players. As Yudintsev said, the studio has been working on bringing the cross-play experience over to the new release as well, so we can assume that Xbox One and PC players will be able to join together in battle. Cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players, however, seems highly unlikely considering Sony"s pushback on the issue.
For the uninitiated, the game is a multiplayer vehicular combat game where players are given hundreds of historically accurate aircrafts and tanks for battling each other. There are multiplayer game modes to choose from depending on the difficulty levels that players are comfortable with.
These range from Arcade Battles where vehicle handling is simplified for a more fast-paced experience, to Simulator Battles where players are restricted to the first-person perspective, and features realistic physics. The developer also plans to add Naval battles to the game at a later date.
War Thunder"s Xbox One version does not have a release date yet, but Gaijin Entertainment plans to announce more details at a later date.
