Verizon dumping unlimited data plans for phones this summer

While Verizon may not have any plans to put broadband caps for its FiOS Internet service, it"s another thing entirely when it comes to surfing the net on its phone. While Verizon currently allows its customers to have an unlimited data package for its smartphones for $30 that"s going to change sometime this summer. Reuters reports that Verizon plans to end that data plan but there"s no word on date that plan will expire. Instead Verizon plans to put in tiered pricing plans that will make heavy users pay more. So far there"s no info on what the exact pricing will be like.

However Verizon will be putting something in place for those customers who like to share their phone minutes via family plans. According to the article, the company has plans to launch new family data plans that will allow users to share data as well. Again there"s still no word on what these new "mega-plans" will be like.

As far as the next version of the iPhone, Verizon says it will offer it at the same time as its main rival AT&T. As we reported earlier this week, the next version of the iPhone will likely not have support for Verizon"s faster LTE/4G service. Verizon is also experimenting with a pre-paid phone service. The story says it is testing such a program in Florida and other parts of the country that would let people pay $50 a month for phone service. However there"s no word on if Verizon will take that kind of service beyond the testing phase.
