People who bought the Motorola Xoom tablet several months ago from Verizon Wireless will finally be able to get that long promised 4G wireless upgrade starting Thursday. Verizon announced this week that on Thursday owners of the tablet will be able to surf to a special web site where they will go through the steps needed to send the product to Verizon. The company promises that it will take only six business days to upgrade the tablet and send it back to the customer. The upgrade will be free of charge and once completed the Xoom will be able to connect to Verizon"s LTE based network, where available.
The process actually began in late August. Verizon emailed a number of its Xoom customers saying it was upgrading the tablets to 4G that were owned by businesses and government contracts. In addition to the upgrade program, Verizon will begin selling Motorola Xoom tablets that will have the 4G wireless hardware built in beginning on October 13. The price for the 10 inch Android 3.2 tablet will be $499.99 with a new two year contract.
While customers who bought the Xoom several months ago are just now getting a chance to connect to Verizon"s faster network, Motorola may be getting ready to launch its second generation tablet products. As we reported earlier this month, Internet leaks show that Motorola may be working on a 10.1 inch Xoom 2 tablet along with a smaller 8.2 inch model called the Xoom 2 Media Edition.
