Verizon Wireless announced today that in its last quarter it sold a total of 2 million units of Apple"s iPhone. The sales numbers were part of Verizon"s quarterly financial results, this time for the three month period that ended on September 30. Verizon would not say how many units of the just released iPhone 4S it has sold so far with company execs only saying during an analyst Q&A today that it was difficult to keep the iPhone 4S in stock.
The iPhone 4S officially went on sale on October 14. Apple previously announced this week it has sold over 4 million units of the iPhone 4S worldwide in its first three days of being on sale. AT&T, one of the phone"s wireless carriers here in the US, said later in the week it has already activated over 1 million units of the iPhone 4S.
Overall, Verizon generated $27.9 billion in revenue in the last quarter, with net income coming in at $1.38 billion. Both numbers were higher than the same time period a year ago and were also slightly higher than analysts" expectations. Verizon said it added 1.3 million wireless customers during the last quarter, bringing its total number of wireless customers to 107.7 million. It remains the nation"s biggest wireless phone carrier.
While 35 percent of the 5.6 million smartphones sold by Verizon in the last quarter were iPhones, over half were based on Google"s Android operating system. In addition, Verizon sold 1.4 million smartphones that are compatible with the company"s faster LTE-based wireless network.
