It looks like Verizon has reversed course for the time being, SIM unlocking its carrier version of its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. The carrier previously sold locked versions of the phones, causing an uproar from those trying to purchase the units.
Once again the internet and its citizens quickly let it be known that Verizon was carrier locking its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL devices. This was a problem for folks trying to purchase the unit at stores for use on other carriers. While it wasn"t a hard lock, the problem could be resolved by activating the handsets on Verizon"s network, at which point it would unlock itself for use on other carriers a day later.
Many were not pleased with this, as Verizon and Best Buy are the most convenient locations you can purchase the hardware from. Speaking with The Verge, a Verizon spokesperson confirmed that the carrier would lift the lock immediately though a software update, but it could be temporary.
“At launch, there was an update related to an automatic overnight unlock on Pixel 3s, which also showed up on phones sold in Best Buy stores. We have temporarily removed it from Pixel 3 and are assessing where it will be implemented in the future.”
Per the spokesperson, the issue should help those purchasing their handsets from Best Buy locations. It is unclear at this point when the lock will be implemented once again, but if you want to purchase it unlocked without having to go through Google, then you better make your purchase soon.
If you have time to wait and don"t want to go through the hassle of purchasing through Best Buy, you can always buy directly from the Google Store.
