Samsung is holding a big press event in New York City on Monday where it is expected to finally announced that its Galaxy S II smartphone will be made available here in the US. However it looks like one of the big wireless carriers won"t be offering its own version of the smartphone after all. The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon Wireless has decided to pass on offering the Galaxy S II to its customers. In a statement, Verizon said, "We have a robust portfolio of devices that offer customers exciting options including the Droid Charge by Samsung which runs on Verizon Wireless" 4G LTE network."
The phone has already sold very well in other parts of the world with Samsung claiming it has sold a total of 5 million units since it launched earlier this year in Europe, Japan, and Korea. The phone is running on Android 2.3, with a large 4.3 inch screen, a dual-core processor with speeds of 1.2 GHz, an eight megapixel camera in the back, a two megapixel camera in the front for video chat and more.
That still means that customers of AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile will be able to get their own versions of the Galaxy S II. It"s now expected that two of these wireless carriers will keep the Galaxy S II name when they launch their versions of the device. Meanwhile Boy Genius Report is claiming via unnamed sources that Verizon will offer another Samsung phone with tech specs that are close to the Galaxy S II later this year.
