Google began rolling out Android 7.1.2 Nougat to supported Pixel and Nexus devices earlier this week, posting factory images the next day. The Verizon Wireless models of the Pixel and Pixel XL are just receiving it now, and those phones get their own special build of the OS, NHG47K.
Most were expecting to receive N2G47E at some point, which was the one that went out to unlocked devices. The change isn"t unprecedented though, as the Verizon variants of the handset got their own version of the November 2016 update to Android 7.1.
Here are the improvements that Verizon lists for the update:
Better performance and connectivity for Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi
Adds a new feature allowing you to back up and restore 1st-party apps such as Calendar™, Drive™ and Messenger
Better Voice call performance
Latest Android™ security patches
This update fixes the following issues:
Certain HD Voice/Wi-Fi Calling options were missing after the phone"s software was updated
In rare cases the phone was not able to receive text messages.
Google also released its monthly usage breakdown of Android, where the latest version, 7.1, hadn"t grown at all. And to be clear, today"s update won"t change that in the slightest. Every Pixel handset shipped with Android 7.1, so a bump to 7.1.2 doesn"t change anything. Indeed, nearly eight months after its release, just 4.9% of Google Play devices are on Nougat, and just 0.4% are on 7.1.x.
The company hasn"t yet published the factory or OTA images of this new build for the Verizon Pixel and Pixel XL, but it should soon. When they are published, you"ll be able to find the factory images here and the OTA images here.
