Windows 8 owners will officially be able to get a version of the popular VLC media player for its "Modern" UI in (hopefully) a few more months. Today, the Kickstarter fund raising campaign to speed up development of the software went over their £40,000 goal with five days to go.
The Kickstarter page included a news update from the VideoLAN team but that update was for backers only. In our previous interview with members of the team, they indicated that while a Windows 8 version of VLC would have been made eventually, it would likely take a couple of years due to the time constraints of the all-volunteer team. They stated, "Therefore we started this fundraiser in order to contract known developers to work on it full-time, to bootstrap the important parts."
As previously announced, the Windows 8 team will also work on a port for VLC that will be made for Windows Phone 8 as well. With five days to go, it"s also possible that the team could come up with some additional "stretch" goals for the campaign before it ends that could see some more features added to the Windows 8 VLC port.
