Hot on the heels of Microsoft announcing their new version of Hyper-V, which is due out with Windows 8, VMware has revealed their latest version of vSphere and is officially launching their "cloud infrastructure suite" which is a collection of software "required to build secure, efficient, and enterprise-ready clouds."
The Register reports that VMware CEO, Paul Maritz said at an event today "VMware virtual machines are about six months away from running 50 per cent of the world"s server workloads", and continued on to say that "We"ve put into vSphere 5 many features ... that directly speak to that acceleration, that will [help us] get the other 50 per cent of workloads."
vSphere 5 brings 200 new features to the virtualization platform, including support for 32 vCPU"s and 1TB of RAM for a single VM, intelligent policy automation, auto-deploy, profile-driven storage and Storage DRS.
The cloud infrastructure suite is made up of vShield, vCenter operations, vCenter Site Recovery Manager , and vCloud® Director 1.5. The products enable businesses to build faster, automated and secure private cloud infrastructure. As an example of the power the suite provides, vCloud Director makes it easy for organizations to provide VM"s and services to end users through a web browser. In essence, By the Bell explains "vCloud Director provides the self-service portal that accepts user requests and translates them into tasks in the vSphere environment."
Pricing for the product remains the same, and VMware says that vSphere 5 will be available sometime in Q3 2011.
