Want to test the next PlayStation 4 system update? Sony is now signing up new beta testers

It"s been just under five months since Sony released its 4.00 "Shingen" update for the PlayStation 4, adding "a fresh coat of paint" to the UI, along with a range of other improvements. Now, the company is preparing for the next major update for its console family, and it"s looking for beta testers to help put the update through its paces.

Sony has now opened registration for those wishing to join its beta program for the upcoming System Software 4.5 update. However, there"s no guarantee that you"ll actually be accepted if you register - Sony only says that it"s inviting users to "sign up for a chance to be a beta tester".

Those who are accepted to the program will be the first to test the consoles" new features in its next update, before they roll out to the general public. Sony explained:

In order to sign up, you’ll need a PS4 with an internet connection, and access to a Master Account. And remember — you can roll back to the previous system software at any time.

If you"re accepted, Sony will email you with details on how to download and install its new beta system software. You can register anytime from now until "early February" - but only those aged 18 and over will be considered for the program.

Sony says that it will "soon" announce details of the features that the new update will bring.
