Today on day two of the Snapdragon Technology Summit, it"s time for a deep dive into the Snapdragon 865. Google took to the stage to show off some security features, announcing that the new Android identity credentials API is coming in Android R.
Indeed, the idea is that you"ll be able to ditch your wallet completely. With mobile payments, the idea was that you could leave your credit cards at home. Now, you"ll be able to leave your driver"s license at home as well.
Google wasn"t clear about how it"s handling government regulations on this type of thing. In fact, the company spoke about it very briefly, so we"ll probably find out more soon. It will be interesting to see how well this new identification system will work in other countries, with more secure IDs like passports (as opposed to a state driver"s license), and so on.
The example that Google provided was that you might forget your ID on your way to the airport, a very real scenario where you absolutely need an ID. Presumably though, this means that this electronic ID will work in airports. We"ll find out more next year when we start to hear more about Android R.
Qualcomm sponsored the travel and accommodations for Neowin to attend Snapdragon Technology Summit.
