The acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook is paying dividends since it was acquired in 2014. Almost two years after the app reached 500 million active monthly users, it has since reached another milestone of a whopping 900 million active users.
The second most downloaded Android app, which hit 1 billion downloads in June, has become more popular than Facebookâs Messenger service which hit 700 million monthly active users in June since becoming a standalone app.
WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum was excited to share the news with his followers on Facebook. The milestone is a worthy achievement for the 39-year-old, who announced a focus on growth of the app in 2014.
The popular messaging app was acquired in 2014 for the whopping sum of $22bn, despite its net loss of $138.1M for the previous year. Facebook was estimated by Bloomberg to be paying $55 a user, who generated only 3 cents of revenue each, when it bought the company. CEO Mark Zuckerberg defending the pricey acquisition, saying Facebook would acquire a large portion of the lucrative in-phone messaging service while knocking out one of its major competitors by bringing it into the company.
