WhatsApp may be a super popular way to send and receive text messages but there’s still one feature that it lacks: voice calling. Well, that will change in the very near future.
Yes that’s right, voice calling is coming soon to WhatsApp so users will be able to call friends and family instead of texting them (if only there was another way of doing that). The info comes from WhatsApp, albeit indirectly.
First spotted by the folks at NDTV Gadgets, an iOS permissions alert is the one that revealed the upcoming feature. If you haven’t given WhatsApp access to your microphone the app will notify you by saying “WhatsApp requires microphone access to send Voice Messages, record Videos with sounds, make and receive Voice Calls”.
The feature seems to already be coded inside the app but it’s not yet functional. There’s no official word on when it might go live but judging by the evidence it won’t be long now and it will probably come to iOS devices first.
WhatsApp is a very popular messaging service in many parts of the world, and was recently acquired by Facebook for $16 billion.
