If you"re one of the holdouts that are still trying to keep from upgrading to Windows 10, you"re probably familiar with the image below. The good news is, after July 29, you won"t have to see it anymore.
For almost a year, Windows 7 and 8.1 users have been dealing with adware called Get Windows 10 (GWX), an app that"s designed to show the user pop-ups from time to time in an effort to get them to upgrade to Microsoft"s latest OS. As the free upgrade is slated to end on July 29, it gave rise to the question of whether we"ll still get this pop-up.
Microsoft issued the following statement to WinBeta:
Details are still being finalized, but on July 29th the Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide. Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down.
It would appear that at the least, it will be disabled when the free upgrade period ends, but it will still be installed on your PC for a bit longer than that.
Microsoft has been heavily criticized for the tactics that it has used to compel users to upgrade to Windows 10. In a recent incident, a live TV weather report was interrupted by the appearance of the GWX app.
This is bound to be good news for anyone that is affected by it. If you are waiting to upgrade to Windows 10, but you"d like to wait until after July 29, keep in mind that there are steps you can take to preserve that free upgrade.
