Yesterday, Google formally announced the latest version of its mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, which will first be available on the trio of new Nexus devices which were unveiled alongside it. But as with any OS update, questions are now being asked about which existing devices will be eligible to receive it.
It will be up to manufacturers and carriers to develop and approve the update for particular devices, and many will no doubt drag their feet as they focus on selling new devices rather than updating old ones. But the phones and tablets in Google"s Nexus range – the jewel in the crown of the Android ecosystem – are special cases, and have always received the latest OS updates first.
Not all Nexus devices will get Lollipop, but many will, including a couple that some may well have expected to have been dropped from the list. Google has updated its blog post from yesterday with a new addition, and Android Police has also received word from the company confirming another device.
With these new updates, the list of earlier Nexus phones and tablets that will get Android 5.0 now includes:
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 7 (2012)
- Nexus 7 (2013)
- Nexus 10
As the company previously stated, all Google Play Edition devices will also get the update.
Unfortunately, that list does not include older Nexus devices, including the Nexus One, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. The Galaxy Nexus was dropped from Google"s list of devices eligible for Android updates a year ago, prompting a petition that attracted thousands of signatures from customers demanding that the handset be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat, but which ultimately failed to reverse the company"s decision.
