Why wasn't a Halo game ready for the Xbox One launch?

The Xbox One game launch lineup includes some sequels such as "Dead Rising 3" and "Forza Motorsport 5" along with new titles like "Ryse: Son of Rome". However, many have wondered if Microsoft should have released a new Halo game for their newest game console.

As it turned out, there were some plans that included adding a full Halo game for the launch of the Xbox One. In a chat with Kotaku, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer stated:

A couple of years ago we had the discussion of: "Should we do Halo at launch and not do Halo 4 last year?" ... But I was committed to getting Halo 4 done last year, and there was no way we were going to turn around with 343 a full Halo game in a year. So that was the plan we set on. I feel good about that.

The end result was that "Halo 4" was released for the Xbox 360 in 2012 and it became the best selling Microsoft Studios game of all time in the U.S. The Xbox One will get a port of the Windows Phone 8/Windows 8 game "Halo: Spartan Assault" in December and will get a new Halo game in 2014.

The interview also looked towards the future of the Xbox One in terms of games. Spencer says that it will be announcing major games from Japanese developers sometime in 2014. But what about the Gears of War franchise? All four games have been Xbox 360 exclusives for the console and even though the first three games were big hits, Gears of War: Judgement was a sales disappointment when it came out earlier this year.

Spencer said that any comments on the future of that series had to come from developer Epic Games. For their part, Epic is not talking at all about their plans for the franchise. It"s more than possible that the next Gears game, if there is one, will not be an Xbox One exclusive.
