In what is certain to be a gamble, Ubisoft have confirmed that Red Steel 2 will require the Wii MotionPlus accessory to work as intended.
In an interview with Nintendo Power, creative director Jason Vandenberghe confessed that the sequel had been created with MotionPlus specifically in mind, but remained adament that the right design decisions had been made and that the risk would pay off in the end.
"I would love to say to you that it"ll be compatible with just a regular controller, but the gameplay simply isn"t there without MotionPlus," stated Vandenberghe. "That core experience just isn"t there without it."
Since the add-on"s unveil at E3 last year, concerns have grown surrounding a possible split in the development community and in the market, with games becoming designed specifically for use with an optional peripheral.
"It"s a huge risk. We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high," he said.
The Wii MotionPlus attachment will be bundled with Wii Sports Resort and is due to ship this summer. Despite Ubisoft"s concerns about the possible penetration and acceptance of the peripheral, the follow up to Nintendo"s hugely popular Wii Sports is only bound to sell in abundance.
