E3 has been held in Los Angeles for most of its life, with a few exceptions. Now it looks like the 2013 edition of E3 could be relocated to another US city unless the group that runs E3, the Entertainment Software Association, can get some assurances from the city about the LA Convention Center"s future.
The LA Times website reports that the LA Convention Center could have its West Hall demolished in the near future in order to put in a planned NFL stadium in that location. The story claims that there will be a replacement hall that will be built next to the current South Hall.
However, ESA President Michael Gallagher said that they are still talking to the city of Los Angeles and that they could move to a new location for the 2013 show if they feel the remodeled convention center is not to their liking. He states:
We need assurances on things like square footage, the quality of the space, the ease of loading and unloading equipment, signage throughout the convention center for marketing and sponsorships. We love being in Los Angeles, but we also have a show to put on.
The article cites unnamed sources as saying that possible replacement cities could include San Fransisco, New York City, Chicago and New Orleans. E3 started in LA in 1995. It was held in Atlanta in 1997 and 1998 and returned to LA in 1999. In 2007, E3 was held in Santa Monica, California during its two year "media only" period.
