Since its launch in 2011, Minecraft has become phenomenally successful, with over 100 million copies of the game sold across a huge range of platforms, including consoles, PCs and mobile devices. And like so many other popular gaming properties these days, it"s now preparing to make the jump to the silver screen.
Minecraft: The Movie is now in development - but it will be a while before tickets go on sale. Microsoft"s Mojang subsidiary - which developed the game and was acquired by the Redmond tech giant in 2014 - announced today that the movie will be released on May 24, 2019.
Along with a regular cinematic release, the movie will also be available in 3D and IMAX.
Last month, Microsoft announced that it had teamed up with Nintendo to bring Super Mario to the blocky Minecraft universe in a special "mash-up" exclusively available on the Wii U.
