Windows 10 build 17763 is now available in the Fast ring, possibly RTM

It"s a new week and that means it"s time for a new Windows 10 Insider Preview. Build 17763 is now available in the Fast ring.

Development for the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is winding down now, and we might get an RTM build as soon as this week. But while build 17763 is a release candidate, it"s not definitely the RTM, or the build that will ship to the general public. Unlike last week"s Fast ring build, 17760, there are a couple of known issues on this one.

The wording in the blog post has changed this time though. Rather than saying "we are not done yet", it now says "this doesn"t mean we"re done". This could be the RTM build, but Microsoft never confirms that anymore.

You might recall what happened with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, when a build was promoted to Release Preview, a ring reserved for builds going out to the public, and Microsoft ended up having to flight a whole new build. For some reason, the firm is still scared to say something like, "We think this will be the build that goes out to the public, but things can still go wrong." As is the tradition with Windows 10, Microsoft prefers us to speculate instead of just telling us what"s going on.

Here"s the list of fixes and improvements:

  • The build watermark at the lower right-hand corner of the desktop is no longer present in this build. This doesn’t mean we’re done…

  • We fixed an issue where touching a Flash element in Microsoft Edge with two or more fingers could result in the tab crashing.

  • We fixed an issue where thumbnails and icons might not be rendered if there were any video files saved to the desktop.

  • We fixed an issue where certain Bluetooth audio devices wouldn’t play sound in apps that also used the microphone.

  • We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpectedly increased use of battery recently when using certain apps like OneNote.

  • We fixed an issue in PowerShell where it wasn’t displaying characters correctly in Japanese.

  • We fixed an issue resulting in display scaling factors not being applied correctly (so the UI was smaller than expected) when viewing a full screen remote desktop window on a monitor set to certain display scalings.

Here are the known issues:

  • Task Manager is not reporting accurate CPU usage.
  • Arrows to expand “Background processes” in Task Manager are blinking constantly and weirdly.

If you"re on the Fast ring, you can grab today"s build through Windows Update. If not, you can go to the Windows Insider Program tab to get started, or you can just wait, as the Windows 10 October 2018 Update is coming soon.
