Windows 10 for Phones has a file manager, here's how it works

Microsoft has released a technical preview of Windows 10 for Phones and while not everyone can install the OS right now, there are quite a few phones that do support the preview. In this release, there are a plethora of new few features that improve the OS for its users and one such item is the new File Explorer app.

As the name implies, Microsoft is making it quite easy to manage the content on your device from the file manager in a touch friendly way. Everything from folders, multi-selections, searching and filters are all included in this release.

At the top of the app you have the breadcrumb trail that makes it easy to jump through the layering of the folders and different categories. The arrow in the top right takes you back one level through the breadcrumb trail.

On the left side, the "Home" icon brings you back to the landing area that highlights recently viewed files. Below that is your device and if you have an SD card, it will show up below your device in the list.

By long pressing on any folder or file, you get the appropriate context menus. For files you can delete, move, copy, share, rename or look at the properties. When you select "move" you can then roam inside the File Explorer app and locate the new storage area and tap the checkmark to drop the file in the new location.

The app works in landscape too.

This app is important as this OS will also make its way on to small tablets too which will make low-end devices that will be heavily reliant on SD cards easier to use as you can quickly manage your content.

You can check out the gallery below to get a better understanding of how the feature works but do know that this app is one of the less stable features in the OS. We have had this app crash twice while using it to create the gallery.
