Last week, Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insiders program, said that build 10134 is a "good candidate" for a new release to those testing Windows 10 Mobile ahead of its launch later this year. Insiders have been waiting almost a month for an update to the smartphone version of the new OS, following the arrival of build 10080 in mid-May.
We got to see some of the changes in 10134 a few days ago, thanks to screenshots captured from a leaked build - but now there"s also a video of 10134 upon which to feast your eyes.
In the first portion of the video, a Lumia 830 running build 10127 is shown alongside a Lumia 720T (the localized Chinese version of the 720) running 10134. Notable tweaks here include:
- A new search box, replacing the search icon/button, at the top of the All Apps list
- All Apps "jump" buttons - to skip between letters in the list - are now ALL CAPS, rather than lower case
- Swipe gestures now work in apps like Phone and Alarms & Clock, allowing users to pivot between screens in these apps, rather than having to push a button to switch
- Split-view Settings hub when screen is viewed in landscape on higher-res (HD and above) displays, with a similar layout to Settings on Windows 10 PCs
In the second part of the video, build 10134 is shown running on a Verizon Lumia 822 - not exactly cutting edge hardware, given that it was first announced two and a half years ago. Nonetheless, the new build appears to run pretty well on the device, which features 1GB of RAM, but only a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor.
Performance of the Windows Store Beta also appears to have improved in this latest build compared with how it runs on 10080.
Despite the slightly wonky English subtitles, it"s clear that the presenter of the video is impressed with build 10134, saying that it"s "smoother with less bugs" than 10080, and good enough "for daily use". He also says that it"s "more stable and complete [compared] to previous versions".
Gabe Aul said last week that the company is still trying to fix a persistent bug with build 10134 before a decision is made on whether or not to release it. In the video above, the presenter referred to this "update bug", explaining that his Lumia 1520 was bricked when he attempted to install the build.
So while the lack of a new Mobile build for several weeks may well be frustrating for Windows Insiders, it"s probably best that Microsoft sorts that bug out first.
