Yesterday, the head of the Windows Insiders program, Gabe Aul, invited the user community to have their say over whether or not Microsoft should release a new Windows 10 Mobile build immediately, or if it should wait a bit longer until a particularly annoying bug could be fixed.
The response from Insiders was overwhelmingly in favor of releasing it sooner than later, and Aul confirmed that the company would go ahead with that release. Today, Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 10136 to the Fast ring.
However, its immediate release means that Microsoft hasn"t had time to fix that bug, which prevents handsets running the most recent Windows 10 Mobile preview, build 10080, from upgrading to newer versions.
As a result, if you want to install 10136, you"ll have to restore your handset back to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool first. Then fire up the Windows Insider app, and do a Fast ring upgrade to 10136 from there.
If you don"t want to roll back to 8.1, you"ll have to give 10136 a miss, but Microsoft says that it expects to have this bug fixed by the time the next build rolls out. Obviously, we don"t yet know when Microsoft plans to roll out the next Windows 10 Mobile preview, but the company did reveal this week that build 10145 is currently being tested on its internal Fast ring.
One final note, which Microsoft begins by pointing out that it"s "SUPER IMPORTANT TO READ THIS:"
At the end of the upgrade the Lock screen will appear frozen without the date and time for up to 10 minutes. Please be patient and let it sit – eventually the date and time will appear and it will allow you to unlock your phone. There is a post-upgrade migration status screen missing, which normally would show you that it was making progress. If you get impatient and restart or mess with locking/unlocking your phone, you’ll wind up in a funky state – so just relax and let it do its thing.
You have been warned.
