On Monday, Microsoft"s Windows Twitter account tweeted out a promotional video for Windows 1.0. Teasing regarding the first version of Windows continued throughout the week, with several hints toward a Stranger Things tie-in, including terminology associated with the Netflix show, and it being set in the same year (1985) as Windows 1.0"s release. Then, yesterday, a new video basically confirmed that the upcoming announcement was linked to Stranger Things" latest season.
Now, prolific leakster @WalkingCat has finally discovered what the build-up was all about. Microsoft has released a special edition application dubbed "Windows 1.1" on the Store, which is said to be inspired by Windows 1.0 and, rather unsurprisingly, Stranger Things Season 3.
Its official description on the Store page reads as follows:
Experience 1985 nostalgia with a special edition Windows 10 PC app inspired by Windows 1.0—but one that’s been taken over by the Upside Down from Stranger Things. Explore the mysteries and secrets plaguing Hawkins, unlock unique show content and easter eggs, and play retro games and puzzles—all building off Stranger Things 3. Join Eleven, Steve, Dustin and gang as they seek to save Hawkins and the world. Embrace the 80s and grab your hairspray, because it’s basically the raddest show companion experience ever. But fair warning: beware the Mind Flayer.
The PC-only app"s interface and general feel will probably be pretty nostalgic for those who have had some experience with (much) older versions of Windows. Regardless, the game should be an intriguing prospect for all modern Windows users - who are preferably also Stranger Things fans -, as a means to discover what was offered in the operating system"s early days, and how far it has come since then.
Currently, the 775MB application is being shown as unavailable for download, although it might just be location-locked. In any case, we will probably find out more regarding its availability on July 8, as per the most recent "official" teaser.
