Remember Windows Home Server? Microsoft"s niche operating system hasn"t gotten much love from the company of late but today, the official Windows Home Server blog has been updated for the first time in several months. The reason? Microsoft reveals some issues with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview OS when connecting to Windows Home Server-based machines.
If you have a PC that"s running Windows Home Server 2011, the blog states that there are a number of issues when connecting to a PC with Windows 8 Consumer Preview installed. They include being asked for a credential when a person tries to access the share folders from the home group joined client computer. Other issues listed are having the thumbnail of the picture folder not displayed correctly in the Remote Web Access page and having the Power setting of the Client backup not working properly.
Another issue is that users need to enable .NET 3.5 in Windows 8 to join Windows Home Server 2011. In this case, Microsoft offers a way to get this working in a Wiki page.
If you happen to have a server at home running the older 2007 version of Windows Home Server, the Windows Live ID credential used in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview may not work. Again, there is a workaround on this problem listed on Microsoft"s Wiki site. That same site also has a solution to another Windows Home Server 2007 problem where the Client Connector setup may not install the OEM client software on Windows 8.
