While the number of total Windows 8.1 users worldwide went up to 2.64 percent of PC users in November, according to Net Applications, the hardcore gamers who sign onto Valve"s Steam service adopted Microsoft"s latest OS much more quickly. That"s the word from the latest statistics collected from the monthly Steam hardware survey.
The new numbers from November showed that Windows 8.1 is now being used by 6.34 percent of all Steam users, when you combine the 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This compares to just 1.92 percent of Windows 8.1 users on Steam in October. As we reported a few days ago, Steam now has over 65 million accounts. On Sunday, it reached a new record of over 7 million concurrent users.
Windows 8.1 is now being used by more people on Steam than any Mac or Linux OS, as well as more Vista users, and is just behind Windows XP. Windows 8 took a big dive in November"s Steam survey, going from 16.77 percent in October to 11.72 percent last month. Combining Windows 8 with 8.1 brings its share to 18.06 percent in November, compared to 18.69 percent in October.
Windows 7 is by far the most used OS on Steam. In November, its share of users was 64.38 percent, compared to 66.45 percent in October.
