A few days ago, Microsoft updated their Terms of Service for some of its products and services, which will officially go into effect on September 27th. One thing that we didn"t spot at the time was a possible rebranding of two of Microsoft"s software products: Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Writer.
The very first section of the new TOS agreement states what services are covered. including "Microsoft Mail Desktop, Microsoft Writer." This would seem to be new names for both the Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Writer portions of the Windows Essentials collection of software.
A month ago, Microsoft launched a new version of the software bundle, Microsoft Essentials 2012, which included new versions of Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker. The company dropped the "Live" branding from their names. However, the new TOS refers to them as Microsoft Photo Gallery and Microsoft Movie Maker, rather than Windows. Yes, it does seem like Microsoft seems to be a little confused over the names of their free software.
Hopefully Microsoft will make everything clear and decide on a final name for its Windows Essentials software products before the new TOS goes into service later this month.
