Windows Phone 8.1 name appears on Windows Phone store as announcement draws near

Microsoft has yet to formally announce the Windows Phone 8.1 update but the branding has already started to appear in app descriptions on the Windows Phone store today.

The BUILD 2014 conference will begin later today in San Francisco and the next update to Windows Phone is expected to be a major point of focus for the consumers and developers alike. Although, Microsoft has not yet announced the update, various applications on the Windows Phone Store now show "Works with Windows Phone 8.1" in addition to Windows Phone 8. The listed screen resolutions and other specifications are still the same as the previous version.

Microsoft previously pulled all of the Windows Phone 8.1 branding from its websites after it made a brief appearance last month. Now, however, it seems the company does not mind that the name is popping up as the reveal draws near.

Nokia is holding a press conference of its own during BUILD, which starts at 8.30 AM PDT and is expected to reveal one of the first Windows Phone 8.1 handsets, the Lumia 630. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft has up its sleeve as most of the information such as release dates and features of the Windows Phone 8.1 update has already leaked.
