Windows Phone app downloads up 100 percent since WP8 launch

Last week, as part of the company"s annual shareholder"s meeting, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer stated that the number of Windows Phone 8 devices that have been sold in November had increased by four times the amount compared to the same period a year ago.

While Ballmer declined to go into specific sales numbers that day, another Microsoft executive has revealed a little more information about Windows Phone 8. Todd Brix, the Senior Director of the Windows Phone Apps Team, posted on his Twitter page late last week, "If you build it, they will come. 100%+ increase in WP developer revenue & app downloads since WP8 launch in Nov."

Like Ballmer, Brix did not reveal any more details in terms of real download numbers. Earlier in November, he posted word that the Windows Phone 8 SDK was "the most rapidly downloaded SDK MSFT has shipped this year" and that he was seeing " ... 1,500 new dev registrations PER DAY."

So far we have seen the launches of four Nokia Windows Phone 8 devices in the US; the Lumia 810, 820, 822 and 920. HTC has also launched the Windows Phone 8X here in the US, but the company has announced it will not launch the cheaper Windows Phone 8S in the States. We still await the promised launch of the Samsung ATIV S smartphone in the US.
