In some unexpected news, Qualcomm has announced their new MSM8x60 chipset, a dual core processor supported on the Windows Phone platform along with several others including Android.
At the moment, customers purchasing a high end device have come to expect a 1GHz CPU amongst some of the other usual specifications. Under Qualcomm"s new chipset, users purchasing new phones could see those specifications increase with two cores up to 1.5GHz for faster processing and response. The capabilities of this could therefore out perform other phones such as the iPhone 4 which runs at 1GHz.
While there are no specific phone details released, this does however show that work is being done to raise the bar in the future for the platform which launched less than a year ago. According to WPCentral, the chipset is featured in the new HTC EVO 3D which has the following details:
- Dual Scorpion-cores up to 1.5GHz
- Adreno 220 GPU
- 1080P video and playback
- HDMI mirroring
- Dolby 5.1
- 3D capturing and playback
- 16MP dual-camera support
You can check out further details on Qualcomm"s page here. There are a number of higher performance chipsets out there and it is interesting that Windows Phone is still taking a backseat in terms of priority for chip suppliers to support as a brand. This is not necessarily surprising however, since the consumer uptake of the device has been below certain expectations as previously covered here at Neowin.net.
