Windows Server 8 gets official title of Windows Server 2012

Microsoft has now announced the official product name for the next version of its Windows Server software series. In a press release, the company said the product, which has been previously referred to by its code name Windows Server 8, will now be titled Windows Server 2012. It"s expected to be officially released sometime later this year, most likely in the same time frame as the release of Windows 8.

Microsoft released a beta of Windows Server 2012, under the Windows Server 8 name, in late February. The company has already said that Windows Server 2012 will offer "businesses and hosting providers a scalable, dynamic, and multitenant-aware cloud infrastructure that securely connects across premises and allows IT to respond to business needs faster and more efficiently."

The company also recently announced that Windows Server 2012 would have an all new online backup service for its users. It will use the already established Windows Azure cloud-based platform as its basis along with the downloadable Microsoft Online Backup Agent in order for server administrators to transfer files to the backup service. Beta users can try out the backup service, with 10 GB of free storage, when they download and install the current beta version.
