Wolfenstein 3D is generally considered to be the first modern first person shooter game. Created by id Software, it was the start of an all new genre that has grown more popular over the years even as the genre itself has evolved.
This past Saturday, Wolfenstein 3D celebrated its 20th anniversary and today id"s current owners Bethesda Softworks have launched a free browser version of the full game. iOS smartphone and tablet users can also download the Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum game for free via iTunes for a limited time.
If you really want to get a real behind-the-scenes look at the making of this now classic game, Bethesda Softworks has also released a new video version of its podcast. The video features id Software"s founder and lead programer John Carmack not only talking about the early days of id Software but also playing the original DOS version of Wolfenstein 3D while also providing commentary.
Among other things, Carmack said that he was always a proponent of being able to launch the game and start playing it quickly with just a few keystrokes. He also said that there were some thoughts about putting in stealth elements in the game but that it turned out that it was much more fun to simply play with lots of action.
