The Oxford English Dictionary has just added 400 new words to their official list. The 400 new words now put the dictionary over 240,000 words, as spotted by Mashable.com
Last year Oxford introduced a number of abbreviated words like "LOL", "FYI", "OMG", and even a non-acronymic ♥. This year, Oxford has added the words "Woot", "Sexting", "Cyberbullying", "Retweet", "Follower", and a lot more. The addition only further proves the affects social networking and media have on us.
Now that the Oxford English Dictionary has officially added the likes of "woot" and "retweet" -- where someone shares a "tweet" with their followers -- it raises the question what will they add next? As the Internet continues to pump out something new each day, such as a meme, viral video or even new abbreviations, we could see this making a big impact on our language. OED defines the word Follower as, "someone who is tracking a particular person, group, etc. on a social networking site".
The new words will be added to the 12th edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. Next year we might see some new additions like "lulz" or even see OED redefine the word "anon."
