Wordament is first iOS game with Xbox Live Achievements

Wordament was first launched back in April 2011 by two Microsoft team members, John Thornton and Jason Cahill, as a side project. It was launched on the Windows Phone 7 OS and later expanded to Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. The game has become something of a cult hit but this weekend, Wordament is expanding to a much wider audience.

In a post on the game"s official blog, it announced that an iOS port of Wordament has been launched for free for iOS devices (iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad). The game"s iOS players can connect and play online against Windows 8 and Windows Phone users.

More importantly, Wordament is now the first game released on a non-Microsoft platform to support Xbox Live Achievements. The blog states:

When you sign in with your free Microsoft account, you can earn up to 50 Gamerscore from our 10 achievements and you’ll have access to all of your Xbox Friends and Wordament Frenemies. If you’ve played on Windows Phone or Window 8 and jump to the iOS version, all of your player stats and friends will follow your account automatically.

This is a small but important step for Xbox Live as it continues to expand beyond just Microsoft hardware and software. Xbox SmartGlass, which offers a "second screen" experience for Xbox 360 users, has been released for iOS and Android in addition to Windows 8 and Windows Phone.
