There are still a bunch of World of Warcraft players out there, nearly eight years after Blizzard launched the fantasy MMO. Today, the company announced that the game"s fourth commercial expansion pack, Mists of Pandaria, sold 2.7 million units in its first week since launching on September 25th.
The press release states that the sales numbers don"t include those from China, which got access to Mists of Pandaria on October 2nd. Blizzard said that the number of monthly subscribers to World of Warcraft is now over 10 million players.
However, the sales numbers for Mists of Pandaria are still well below those of the last World of Warcraft expansion pack, Cataclysm. When it was released in 2010, Blizzard said it sold over 3.3 million copies of the expansion in just its first 24 hours, and later said it sold over 4.7 million units in its first month.
Blizzard"s press release today added, "The World of Warcraft development team is already hard at work on the first major post-launch content update. Further details, including features and release timing, will be provided in the weeks ahead." It will be interesting to see what Blizzard comes up with for the fifth commercial expansion pack.
