Blizzard Entertainment announced that their second expansion pack to the World of Warcraft game, Wrath of the Lich King, has sold over 2.8 million copies within 24 hours of release, beating the previous record of 2.4, also set by Blizzard Entertainment, with the Burning Crusade expansion pack released in January 2007.
There were numerous events taking place, some of which had thousands of people queueing for the game . On top of beating their own record, the expansion pack has also become GameStop"s best-selling game this year. CEO and co founder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime said "We look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead". With 11 million subscribers prior to release, the game is sure to grow with this latest addition.
The night of release brought in most of the sales, but it is likely sales will continue steadily over the coming months and Christmas period, further increasing the amount of subscribers the game has. Retailing at around $30 to $40, and an additional monthly fee of about $10, this latest release will undoubtedly bring in a large income for Blizzard Entertainment (and Activision too).
Gamers have, overall, been very pleased with the game so far, with many hardcore players making quick progress to reach the level cap of 80 already. What about you - have you managed to play the game yet? If so, what did you think of it?
