Xbox 360 sales still strong with 114,000 units sold in May 2013

While many people may be awaiting the launch of the Xbox One in November, Microsoft is still selling its current Xbox 360 game console. On Monday, the company revealed that, according to numbers from the NPD Group, the Xbox 360 outsold all other game consoles in the US in May for the 29th straight month.

While Microsoft"s blog post did not offer any specific sales numbers, a Twitter post by the company"s Xbox Live programming head Larry Hyrb confirmed that Microsoft sold 114,000 units of the Xbox 360 in May 2013. That compares to 160,000 units in May 2012. Microsoft"s total Xbox 360 revenue (hardware, games and accessories) generated $149.8 million in May 2013. At E3 2013 last week, Microsoft announced a new design for the Xbox 360"s case, making it look more like the upcoming Xbox One.

The overall retail games sales situation in the US continues to look grim. Gamesindustry.biz reports that, according to NPD Group data, overall retail game revenue went down 25 percent in May 2013 to just $386.3 million. Software sales took a especially big hit in May, going down a whopping 44 percent. The DC Comics superhero fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us was the best selling retail game in the US for May for the second straight month.
