Microsoft announced their quarterly profits today, and with it stated that as of the end of June the 360 had an install base of 5 million units. More impressively it announced that it has 3 million subscribers to its xbox live service, although didn"t go into details on how many used the service regularly or who had a gold membership.
Microsoft shipped 1.8 million 360s during the fourth quarter, but this still leaves them a long way away from the target of 10 million consoles that they set themselves last year. Microsoft had hoped to build a cushion of 10 million units over competitor Sony, but with the PS3 due out in less than four months this is now near impossible.
The Home & Entertainment division, under which the Xbox group resides, had a good sales quarter overall: Revenues were $1.14 billion, almost double the $587 million from Q4 2005. However, it had a larger operating loss in this past quarter, $414 million vs. last year"s $201 million.
