Do you want to sing along on your Xbox 360 console? Microsoft hopes the answer to that question is, "Yes." The company announced today it will launch a new Xbox 360 app called Karaoke that will have a very different business model from the normal media app found on the game console.
PlayXBLA.com reports that the Karaoke app, developed by the Karaoke Channel, will be launched "in time for the holidays." The press release states:
Karaoke fans will sing along to scrolling lyrics on screen while their avatar performs the song on stage with a full complement of stage props, backup band and an adoring audience. The more songs are sung and poses struck, the more moola, props, fans and fun are earned as achievements are awarded.
The Karaoke app will allow Xbox 360 users access to put in their favorite songs in a custom list, along with a history feature that lets users find which songs they have accessed before.
The app will have a selection of free songs that will be changed often. However, if you want access to the Karaoke app"s full selection of 8,000 songs, you will have to pay. Unlike other Xbox 360 media apps like Netflix or Hulu that charge a flat monthly subscription fee, Microsoft says, "Full access to the entire library is available for blocks of 2, 6 or 24 hours by redeeming Microsoft Points."
It will be interesting to see if this business model is successful and will be offered as an option for other Xbox 360 media apps in the future.
