Next month, Microsoft will officially launch its new backward compatibility feature on the Xbox One, allowing owners of its newest console to play games that were developed for its earlier Xbox 360. But the head of Xbox says that other ideas have also been considered to extend this feature even further - although not all of these will see the light of day.
In an interview with Gizmodo Brasil, Phil Spencer referred to the possibility of supporting games designed for the original Xbox on the Xbox One - the second time in recent weeks that he"s openly discussed that idea.
But intriguingly, Spencer also talked about another possibility - that of being able to play Xbox 360 games on your PC. His comments are roughly translated below:
It"s something I want to do. It"s a matter of priorities. I would love to have the ability to play Xbox 360 [games] on PC at some point too, but we have different things that we have to think about when we plan these things. But it would be nice to have support for original Xbox games. So yes, I want to do it, but we have many other things we want to do as well.
So while Microsoft has evidently been considering ways to extend its backward compatibility feature, it simply doesn"t have the resources to bring all of its ideas to fruition. But while some features won"t advance beyond the concept stage, the company continues to explore ways to make its Xbox offering more compelling to buyers.
