Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED had some good news to share today for Xbox One owners who are looking to purchase Microsoft"s upcoming next-generation console. Although the highly-anticipated RPG will be releasing before the Xbox Series X console lands at the tail end of the year, the studio will upgrade the title for the new hardware and deliver it as a free update to all owners on the Xbox One generation.
"Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades," said the studio over Twitter. "Owners of #Cyberpunk2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available."
More details on what sort of improvements will this upgrade bring along should arrive as its release date comes closer, but we can expect to see better graphics, more stable frame rates, and ray tracing, among other improvements.
The announcement arrived only a short time after Microsoft confirmed some more details about its upcoming console, like the whopping 12 teraflops of GPU power it will have. As previously confirmed, the Series X will ship with backward compatibility as well, letting its owners play titles from four generations of Xbox consoles.
Although CD Projekt RED will be taking the free upgrade route for Cyberpunk 2077, this probably won"t be the norm for games by other publishers. Also, we will have to wait and see if the studio will offer a similar kind of deal for PlayStation 5 owners too, giving PlayStation 4 copies of Cyberpunk 2077 a free upgrade.
Cyberpunk 2077 is now slated to launch on September 17, as the original April launch was pushed back to give the development teams more time to polish the game. Meanwhile, the next-generation Xbox will be landing sometime in the holiday season late in the year.
