Yahoo has begun notifying users of its Mail app on Windows 10 that it will "stop working" in just a few days" time. The company hasn"t yet made a formal announcement regarding the upcoming shutdown of the app, but numerous users have reported seeing a notification within it, informing them of its impending closure:
Your Windows 10 app will stop working after May 22.
Thank you for using Windows 10 app to check your Yahoo Mail. Going forward, please check your email in any web browser on your computer.
However, according to OnMSFT, "a large number of users" have reported that the app has already stopped working for them, and that they"re now unable to use it to access their email.
Yahoo Mail is still listed on the Windows Store, but the ability to download and install it has now been removed. Instead, the listing states that "Yahoo Mail is not currently available."
While Yahoo recommends that users should now access their email via its website, there is another option. Users can choose to set up their Yahoo Mail accounts in another app, such as Outlook, or the Windows 10 Mail app.
In September, Yahoo disclosed that it had suffered a massive data breach in 2014, affecting around 500 million user accounts. In December, it revealed details of another major security breach, which affected over a billion accounts. In February of this year, it warned some of its users that the source code it used to generate cookies had been stolen, enabling "state-sponsored" parties to gain access to users" accounts through the use of "forged cookies".
Yahoo is now in the process of finalizing its (discounted) acquisition by Verizon; when that process is complete, Verizon plans to merge Yahoo and AOL into a new company, known as "Oath".

Update: Yahoo has contacted Neowin with a statement regarding the shutdown of its Windows 10 app. A Yahoo spokesperson said:
At Yahoo, we constantly review and revise our product portfolio as we strive to innovate and bring users the best experiences. With that in mind, the Yahoo Mail app for Windows 10 will no longer be supported. We have started to roll out this update this week, and it will go into effect for all users by May 22nd. We encourage Windows 10 users to take advantage of sending and receiving emails with Yahoo Mail on the web.
