Yahoo! announces real time search integration with Twitter

Yahoo! and Twitter have announced a partnership that will bring real time Twitter updates into Yahoo!"s search results.

Yahoo! will be given full access to Twitter"s "Firehose", a full feed of public tweets sent to Twitter. In a company blog posting, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone announced the partnership. "From our perspective, this partnership represents a big opportunity. Tweets may be short, but they have proven over and over again to contain valuable information. Our open approach helps us get closer to providing universal connectivity to a global network of immediate information."

Real-time search integration is expected to be rolled out shortly and further updates will follow later:

  • Access to Twitter feeds from Yahoo - Users will be able to access their Tweets across Yahoo"s many products including the homepage, Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Sports.
  • Send Twitter updates from Yahoo - Users will be able to update their Twitter status from Yahoo!
  • Real-time public Twitter updates in Search - Yahoo Search, News, Finance, Entertainment and Sports will include real-time public Twitter updates.

Google and Twitter announced a partnership deal in October 2009. In December 2009 Google built real time Twitter updates into Google"s search results. Microsoft"s Bing search engine also introduced real time Twitter updates into search results in July 2009, however the integration isn"t as broad as Google and Yahoo!"s offerings.
