When Microsoft announced the Windows 10 Creators Update last October, it identified "3D for everyone" as one of three key areas on which the update would focus.
In an impressive demo, it showed off a new Capture 3D mobile app, which used a smartphone"s rear camera to quickly "scan" a real-world object, and turn it into a 3D model that could be manipulated and edited in the company"s new Paint 3D app. The demo used HP"s Windows 10 Mobile flagship, the Elite x3, but Microsoft said it planned to bring the app to other platforms too.
But while Paint 3D has since been made available to Windows Insiders, and will be generally available to all Windows 10 users when the Creators Update is released on April 11, there"s been no sign of the Capture 3D app since its debut last year. And unfortunately, it looks like it won"t be arriving anytime soon.
MSPoweruser asked Microsoft about its plans to make the app publicly available - but the company"s response wasn"t particularly enlightening:
The capability to capture objects from your world in 3D using the camera on your phone is not one of our Creators Update features. As we shared in October, we envision the functionality being available across platforms, and we’re working to bring to mobile devices in the future.
That clearly leaves things rather open-ended, with no hint of when Capture 3D will arrive. A launch alongside the Windows 10 Creators Update would obviously have made the most sense, but for whatever reason, that hasn"t happened - so for now, the wait for the new app continues.
