YouTube has been supporting high dynamic range (HDR) videos on its platform since late 2016 beginning with HDR-ready TVs. Since then, the video-sharing service has extended support for that video quality to other HDR-enabled devices such as the Google Pixel, Galaxy S8 and S8+, and LG V30.
Now, you may also view YouTube videos in HDR quality on the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max. YouTube for iOS has reportedly been updated with support for HDR on Apple"s latest flagship phones.
The feature is part of the app"s latest update that bumps up its version number to 13.37 on the App Store. With the new video quality option, compatible clips will be displaying the "HDR" label next to the resolution. For users, there"s an option to switch on the HDR quality manually, though it can also be automatically enabled, provided HDR is available for the video being watched.
HDR videos boast a higher contrast for more detailed shadows and highlights and it also offers vivid pictures. Both the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max, announced earlier this month, sport an OLED screen that promises 60% greater dynamic range.
YouTube has yet to officially announce the update and the app"s release notes on its App Store listing only indicates the inclusion of bug fixes and performance improvements. The HDR support is just one of the many popular features added to YouTube for iOS after the app received a dark theme earlier this year.
